Hosford-Abernathy

Hosford-Abernathy Neighborhood Guide and Portland Real Estate Information

This Portland neighborhood is located in the inner Southeast section of the city. It shares borders with such neighborhoods as Buckman, Sunnyside, Richmond, Brooklyn, Creston-Kenilworth, downtown Portland and South Portland.

This community was originally named in the 1970s after two schools in the area: Hosford Middle School and Abernathy Elementary School.

Today, Hosford is known for its eclectic mix of residential, business and industrial properties. It’s also loved for Ladd’s Addition, which is the north central portion of the neighborhood that features a unique X-shaped street pattern.

Live in Hosford-Abernathy

This Portland neighborhood boasts a lot of history as well as a strong sense of community pride among residents.

Inside this community, you’ll find an array of single-family homes, townhomes, condos, as well as apartments.

In some sections of town – particularly Ladd’s Addition – the majority of the properties were built between 1905 and 1920. These homes reflect such home style as bungalows, English Cottages and Four Squares.

There are also a number of townhomes that were built in the mid 1990s in this neighborhood. A lot of them are centered around SE 26th, although others have been built elsewhere in town.

Residents also have the option of living in a couple of condo developments that were constructed in the early 2000s in Hosford-Abernathy.

More on Ladd’s Addition

This section of the neighborhood is actually considered a National Historic District and was designated as such in 1988.

Residents generally define this section as being bounded by SE Division, SE Hawthorne, SE 12th and SE 20th.

In all, this district sits on more than 1,200 acres and features more than 625 buildings!

Home styles in this section mostly include Bungalow/Craftsman style homes.

This section was created by William S. Ladd in 1891. Fun fact: Ladd made sure all of the streets were named after trees except for two (one for him and one for his wife)

With its unique layout and distinctive personality, Ladd’s Addition was recognized as one of the “Top 10 Great Neighborhoods” by the American Planning Association in 2009.

Amenities Worth Checking Out

The area around SE 11thAvenue and Division Street is also a popular gathering place for local artists and businesses.

Another amenity located in this community is the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, which is on the riverfront.
