Kenton

Kenton Neighborhood Guide for the Portland, NC Real Estate Market

This Portland neighborhood, located in the north section of the city, is a unique microcosm that has evolved over the years to better serve its residents!

Originally a company town that was founded in 1911 for the SwifMeat Packing Company, modern day Kenton shares borders with some other fabulous Portland neighborhoods. These include Hayden Island, Bridgeton, Sunderland, Piedmont, Arbor Lodge, University Park, Portsmouth and St. Johns.

The History of Kenton

Back in the early days (around the 1900s), Kenton was actually a farming community. Then it became a company town for the Swift Meat Packing Company until the neighborhood saw major revitalization later in the 1900s.

Over the years, Kenton has developed its own unique identity and has continued to prosper because of its long-time residents and local businesses. These include Posie’s Coffee, The Kenton Pub, Saucer Café and Pizza Fino.

It also benefits today because of its proximity to major thoroughfares as well as the Max light rail. Because of these factors, downtown Portland is less than 10 minutes away by car and less than half an hour away by bicycle!

This community continues to evolve, making it a promising location to live in Portland.
