NW District Neighborhood Guide and Portland OR Real Estate Information

This densely populated neighborhood in the northwest section of Portland is comprised of mostly retail and residential and is a fantastic place to reside!

Filled with mostly Craftsman- and Old Portland-style homes, this community also features a number of newer condominiums that are worth checking out!

This community is roughly defined as sharing borders with the West Hills, I-405, and the Willamette River. It is right next to such other Portland neighborhoods as Forest Park, Hillside, Pearl District, Goose Hollow and Northwest Industrial.

The Various Sections of the NW District

The residents of this district oscillate between calling it Northwest and Nob Hill. So what’s the story behind the names/ Evidently, Northwest was named for its location within the city while Nob Hill was likely lifted from a community by the same name in San Francisco.

When you live in the Northwest District, you’ll be within walking distance of an array of restaurants, bars and stores. What’s more, the Portland Streetcar’s first line (which is also known as the NS Line) ends here, meaning that you’ll always be connected to the Pearl District, Downtown Portland and more!
Locals tend to identify the various sections of NW District by the streets within it. For instance:

NW 23rd Avenue is sometimes called “Trendy-third) because this street is a major shopping mecca with high-end boutiques and upscale mixed use buildings. Sometimes this area is also referred to as Uptown.

NW 21st Avenue is the other commercial district within this district and features dining and entertainment options – including an independent film theater and various nightclubs

And the Alphabet Historic District, which was named for the alphabetical progression of the area’s street names, is known for its historic preservation efforts and was even added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

The NW District Lifestyle and Homes

As with other sections of Portland, a variety of home styles are represented in the NW District, including brick apartment homes, newer condominiums and detached single-family homes.

Specific single-family home styles include Bungalow and Crafsman-style homes as well as King Annes.

In recent times, developers have been purchasing homes and renovating them completely or even demolishing them in favor of newer townhomes.

Resident who live here are served by such outstanding public schools as Chapman Elementary and the Metropolitan Learning Center.

And as with the rest of the city, the NW District takes outdoor recreation seriously, which is why there are a number of parks located in this community, including Couch Park and Wallace Park.
